6 Tricks to Jump Start Your Move to Lexington Kentucky

Even if you hate moving, the city of Lexington should get you excited about your relocation. Not only will you get to enjoy everything from bluegrass to opera, but this city features many chances to enjoy great food, from dining to farmer’s markets. Here are some fantastic tips to make moving to Lexington, Kentucky easier, so you can start enjoying this wonderful city sooner.

1. Pack as you sort.

Go into each space with three sorting tools:

  • a black trash bag for garbage
  • a white trash bag for items to donate or sell
  • a cardboard box for things you want to keep

If you’re using a selling app, be aware that these sales can take time. If you don’t have time, have a garage sale. Every move is a chance to only take with you the items you truly love. If your situation allows, have a garage sale to speed up the process of lightening the load. It’s not a good idea to count on monies made from a garage sale as you never know what will sell, but it’s better to be rid of it than to pay to move it.

At the end of the sale, donate. If you have a garage, park outside and stack items for donation near the roll-up door. Many charitable agencies will come and pick things up as long as they’re usable and not too old.

2. Pack for convenience.

Set aside a suitcase or backpack for every member of the family. Pack a change of clothes, linens, toiletries, and a pillow for everyone in their bag so everyone can get a bath, change clothes and make their bed on the first night in your new home.

3. Bring bikes.

Make sure you can quickly get to your bikes because Lexington is bike-friendly. There are many miles of bike trails and dedicated bike lanes to enjoy the scenery and the city.

4. Learn about horses.

Lexington is the horse capital of the world. Keeneland Track is the home of the largest thoroughbred auction. If your kids love horses, they will love Kentucky. The rolling hills around Kentucky provide plenty of pasture for horses and beautiful options for sight-seeing, gentle hikes and picnicking in one of the 122 public parks as well.

5. Come hungry.

Lexington offers a lot of terrific food. From fried green tomatoes to the Crawfish Festival, you can find plenty to eat at local farmer’s markets and food cooperatives. Kentuckians love to share great food and an adult beverage if that’s your thing.

6. Enjoy the small-town feel.

The city of Lexington is just over 300,000 people. There’s plenty to do, a great chance at a good job, and a fair housing market. You’ll enjoy green space for picnics and family fun, beautiful neighborhoods where people watch out for each other, and amenities such as galleries and museums that only larger cities can offer. Come home to Kentucky.
