LEXINGTON, Ky. – “Pass the Hat with Rex,” a grassroots social media campaign to benefit Nourish Lexington, raised $38,236. That includes $25,000 in matching funds from the Rex Chapman Foundation.

“The Rex Chapman Foundation has been honored to support the good work of Nourish Lexington,” said Rex Chapman. “After visiting and seeing first-hand the work they are doing to serve healthy, hearty meals to those in need - I was particularly motivated to help.  Our week of effort made another 30,000+ meals available during the pandemic. The Nourish model feeds hungry families while supporting our local farmers, restaurants and food industry workers.  We are blessed to have Nourish Lexington helping our community and it is has been my pleasure to assist.  Thank You, Nourish!  Let’s Go!”

Rex Chapman kicked off the campaign Feb. 8 with a "TikTok/Pass the Hat" video and encouraged others to join in.

These donations will underwrite almost two months’ worth of Nourish meals at the current rate -- amounting to nearly 30,000 meals once it is matched with some of the reimbursement programs Nourish Lexington uses.

“We are so thankful for the generosity of Rex Chapman and the more than 300 donors who stepped up to contribute,” FoodChain Executive Director Becca Self said. “The benefit will be far-reaching – feeding families, employing restaurant workers and putting nearly $50,000 into the local food system through other matching programs.”

The campaign quickly went global. Here are some of the results:

  • The Rex Chapman Foundation contributed $25,000;
