Michael Clarke built this Federal-style home in 1818. Clarke was a waiter and house-joiner (builder). He purchased his own freedom along with the freedom of his wife Hannah and their son Matthew in 1804. Clarke filed Manumission papers for his wife in 1806 and for his son in 1827 when he reached the age of 25.
