HIGH TEA AND HORSES by: Julie, Horse Blogger
BREEZE THE BLUEGRASS 3/28/12
A weekend of afternoon tea, equine art and artist’s demonstrations are coming up the weekend of April 12-14. Frankie York and her New Editions Gallery, 807 Euclid Avenue in Lexington, in conjunction with the American Academy of Equine Art, also of Lexington, are bringing this special event to the Bluegrass. Afternoon tea at Spindletop Hall, 3414 Iron Works Pike in Lexington, will be Thursday, April 12, 1pm – 4pm. Listen to three Kentucky natives, photographer John Hockensmith, 2011 Breeder’s Cup artist Jaime Corum and 2011 Kentucky Derby artist Lesley Humphrey, talk about their craft and adventures with their own style of equine art. Tickets are for purchase by emailing Frankie@neweditionsgallery.com or by calling 859-266-2766.
Friday, April 13, 10am – 3pm, Lesley Humphrey will be giving a lesson and demonstration of painting at The Artist’s Attic in downtown Lexington. This event is free, but space is limited, so be sure to rsvp.
Saturday, April 14, 5pm – 8pm, don’t miss the artist’s reception at New Editions Gallery. Both Jaime Corum and Lesley Humphrey will have their artwork on exhibit that evening. This exhibit will run through May 15, 2012.

Three levels of horsemanship are offered for youth and adults through Lexington Parks and Recreation. They offer classes for beginners through advanced, including some beginning jumping. All classes take place at Masterson Station Park, 3051 Leestown Road in Lexington, using their horses. The sign up process for these classes is highly competitive and is processed through a lottery system. Spring classes are full at this time, but mark your calendar now for the Summer youth-only classes, which takes place on May 12, with classes beginning June 11. Registration for the Fall Adult and Youth classes takes place August 4, with classes beginning August 13.

Registration is now being accepted for the Youth Riding Program at the Kentucky Horse Park. There are four sessions to choose from:
Session I: June 4-8
Session 2: June 11-15
Session 3: June 18-22
Session 4: June 25-29
Students will learn how to catch, lead, groom and tack a horse. The basics of stable management will also be introduced. I have helped teach these classes in the past and can tell you that they are a great way to introduce the horse and riding basics to a new rider and that the classes can also be tailored to fit the needs of the more proficient rider.

Enjoy your time in the Bluegrass!

What an amazing story poinitng out how animals can mirror and teach so precisely and straight to the point. I am glad to see that the author doesn't leave it by the description of a beautiful story, but also emphazises the role of the therapist/coach at this moment. It's a very important question to ask: How far should we let the animal mirror and where do we have to intervene to protect someone from either physical pain or just too much feedback to handle at that moment?
