Bluegrass Flavors and Feel: 4/30/12

It is difficult to imagine Lexington without W+M, the briefer, more minimalist and ever-so-much-more-fashion-forward abbreviation for Wine + Market.

Harder-to-find wines live on one side of this duplex, in a muted room (the wines prefer darker surroundings) lined with shelving bisected by a long wooden table decorated with elegant serving pieces staggered by height and texture.

Since it opened a few years ago, the shop has always been the place to go for good advice on food and wine pairing. And now, its new owner, Renee Saunier Brewer, has just received her certificate from the Court of Master Sommeliers for having completed the Introductory Sommelier Course.

The other half of the refurbished building is its polar opposite: enormous windows with generous natural light pouring in on the bright white tile walls. Unlike the wine side with its contemporary rustic feel, the market area could be straight out of an early 20th century European delicatessen. There are displays of fresh baked goods and candies up front, racks of fancy dry goods like packages of high-end pastas and locally-roasted coffee, refrigerator cases full of fancy waters, beer and wine, and a spectacular cheese case loaded with everything from regional chevre to salty blue cheese that tastes like butterscotch hailing from the former Soviet republic of Georgia.

But the focal point of this room, like the other, is table space, only here you can sit down for a lunch of sandwiches or an afternoon interlude of baked goods and a shot of coffee.

This destination on the uber-hot Jefferson Street corridor is minimalist in one other way: its name vastly understates its riches.

Thank you for the recent ponitsg, I was unsure what the library hours was now, the summer classes have ended, Please keep us informed of the new hours for the fall. Suggestion 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., because most student are already on campus for 9:30 a.m. classes, by the end of the evening most student are getting off from work and need to student before a 6:00 p.m. class. Thank you
